Indian Ocean, world's third largest ocean (28,350,000 sq mi/73,426,500 sq km), bounded by Antarctica to the south, Africa to the west, and Australia and Indonesia to the east. The Indian subcontinent divides the northern part of the ocean into 2 great arms, the Arabian Sea to the west and the Bay of Bengal to the east. Largest of its many islands are Madagascar and Sri Lanka.
