Illinois River



Illinois River, major waterway linking the Mississippi River with Lake Michigan. Formed by the confluence of the Des Plaines and Kankakee rivers, about 45 mi (72 km) southwest of Chicago, the Illinois River flows west and southwest for about 275 mi (443 km). It joins the Mississippi about 16 mi (26 km) above Alton, Ill.
