Icon



Icon (Greek, “image”), religious image in the Eastern and Russian Orthodox churches. Icons play an important part in liturgy. The Virgin Mary and Jesus were traditional icon figures; by the 7th century icon worship was an officially encouraged cult in the Byzantine Christian Church.
