Hysteria



Hysteria, or conversion disorder, medical diagnostic term for illness characterized by physical complaints without physical cause. The word “hysteria” derives from the ancient Greeks, who applied the term solely to diseases of women, which were explained as being due to malfunctioning of the uterus (hystera).
