House, building in which one or a few families live. It may be built of wood, brick, or stone. It usually consists of several rooms, which are heated by a furnace and wired for electricity. Most modern houses also contain plumbing to supply water and carry away waste. They may vary in design, size, and in their number of rooms. The housing industry actually consists of a number of related professions and involves banks, real estate and insurance companies, architects, carpenters, plumbers, and electricians.
