Hornet

Hornet, any of several kinds of large social wasps (family Vespidae), that, unlike the more common yellow jackets, build their nests in trees or in human dwellings. The nest, enclosed in a paperlike shell, consists of a series of horizontal combs. Hornets make the papery material by chewing woody plant matters. Female hornets can inflict an extremely painful sting.
