Thomas Hooker

Hooker, Thomas (1586–1647), early American Puritan clergyman. A religious exile from England, he came to Massachusetts via Holland (1633) and became minister at the New Town (now Cambridge) settlement. Conflicts with the Massachusetts leaders drove him and his congregation to Connecticut (1635–36), and he and his followers founded Hartford.
