Holbein

Holbein, name of 2 German painters, Hans Holbein the Elder (c.1465–1524) was a German Gothic painter of great distinction, best known for his many altarpieces and other church decorations, such as the Kaisheim altar (1502). His middle and later work may have been influenced by Grünewald. His son, Hans Holbein the Younger (1497?–1543), a religious painter and portraitist, lived in many European countries and later entered the service of Henry VIII of England, whose most famous portraits are by him.
