Paul Hindemith

Hindemith, Paul (1895–1963), German-born U.S. composer and teacher. Denounced as a modernist because of his dissonant harmonies and counterpoint, he was banned by the Nazis in Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1937. He later returned to more tonal, neoclassical forms. Among his major works are the symphony (1934) and opera (1938) Mathis the Painter, Symphonic Metamorphoses on Themes of Carl Maria von Weber (1943), and The Four Temperaments (1944).
