Hesse



Hesse, state in western Germany, located along the Rhine River in an important agricultural and mining region. Covering an area of 8,152 sq mi (21,113 sq km), the present boundaries of Hesse were formed after World War II from a combination of several other states and former Prussian provinces. The capital is Wiesbaden; other principal cities are Darmstadt, Frankfurt, and Kassel.
