Herculaneum



Herculaneum, ancient city at the foot of Mt. Vesuvius in Italy. Along with Pompeii, it was destroyed in A.D. 79 by the eruption of Vesuvius, which engulfed it in preservative volcanic mud. Rediscovered in 1709, it is still being excavated.
