Sir John Hawkins



Hawkins, Sir John (1532–95), British admiral. He was a slave trader and ship captain who became treasurer of the navy and sponsored reforms in ship design and gunnery that contributed to victory over the Spanish Armada (1588), also commanding an English squadron during the battle.
