Harrisburg



Harrisburg (pop. 587,986), state capital of Pennsylvania and seat of Dauphin County. Located in the southeastern part of the state on the Susquehanna River, Harrisburg was first settled in 1718. The construction of the Erie Canal and the Pennsylvania Railroad helped maintain its prominence as a trading center. It is now known for its steel plants. Other industries include meatpacking, printing, airplane parts, and machinery.
