Hampton University



Hampton University, private college in Hampton, Va., founded 1868 to educate freed slaves and later funded for the education of Native Americans. Originally the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute, it adopted a college curriculum in 1923 and subsequently became Hampton Institute (1930) and Hampton University (1984). Its library includes the noted George Foster Peabody Collection of materials on black history.
