Hampton Roads Conference



Hampton Roads Conference, meeting held on Feb. 3, 1865 aboard the River Queen, anchored in Chesapeake Bay, in an attempt to end the Civil War. President Lincoln and Secretary of State William H. Seward represented the North; Confederate Vice President Alexander H. Stevens, Sen. Robert M. Hunter, and Assistant Secretary of War John A. Campbell represented the South. Lincoln insisted on the emancipation of the slaves and restoration of the Union, and no agreement was reached.
