Guadalcanal

Guadalcanal, largest of the Solomon Islands, in the South Pacific. Volcanic and mountainous, it supports extensive coconut plantations that are the economic mainstay; copra and timber are the main exports. The island was the scene of a decisive battle of World War II in 1943, when it was recaptured by Allied troops from the Japanese.
