Gretna Green

Gretna Green, village in Scotland. Located just across the border from England, for centuries it was a mecca for eloping couples seeking a quick marriage. Couples had only to state their desire to be married before witnesses. With revisions in marriage laws, the Gretna Green ceremonies became illegal in 1939.
