Grasse, François Joseph Paul, Comte de (1722–88), French naval commander whose fleet made possible Washington's decisive victory over the British at the siege of Yorktown (1781). Grasse landed 3,000 troops to aid the siege, and also blockaded General Cornwallis's British fleet.
