Patrick Sarsfield Gilmore

Gilmore, Patrick Sarsfield (1829–92), foremost U.S. bandmaster of the 1800s and creator of Gilmore's Band, considered the first great U.S. band. He altered the instrumentation of the band to include more reeds, particularly clarinets, creating the standards for modern concert bands. Under the pseudonym Louis Lambert, he wrote “When Johnny Comes Marching Home” (1863).
