Georgetown



Georgetown (pop. 72,000), capital and largest city of Guyana, on the north (Atlantic) coast of South America, at the mouth of the Demarara River. The Dutch settled the city in the 1600s and named it Stabroek; in 1812 it came under British control and acquired its current name.
