Gentlemen's agreement



Gentlemen's agreement, informal pact between Japan and the United States in 1907. The United States promised to end discrimination against the Japanese, and the Japanese agreed to stop unrestricted emigration to America. It lapsed in 1924 when Congress restricted Japanese immigration.
