Horatio Gates



Gates, Horatio (1727–1806), American Revolutionary War general. As a commander of the Northern army he defeated General Burgoyne at the battle of Saratoga in 1777. After an unsuccessful attempt to replace Washington as commander-in-chief, Gates took command in the South in 1780 and was badly defeated at Camden.
