Gas meter

filled chamber emptied consumer

Gas meter, device that measures the volume of gas delivered to a consumer. Meters usually have several measuring chambers. As one chamber is being emptied, the other is being filled. This provides a steady flow of gas to the consumer. The total volume of gas used is determined by counting the number of times each chamber is filled and emptied.
