Gallaudet



Gallaudet, family name of U.S. educators of the deaf. Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet (1787–1851) founded the Hartford School for the Deaf in 1817. His older son, Thomas Gallaudet (1822–1902), founded a church for the deaf in New York City and a home for elderly deaf mutes in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Edward Miner Gallaudet (1837–1917), the younger son, founded Gallaudet College (1864) in Washington, D.C.
