Thomas Gainsborough



Gainsborough, Thomas (1727–88), English portraitist and landscape painter. He painted numerous society portraits, and in 1780 he was commissioned to portray George III and Queen Charlotte. The landscapes in which many of his portraits are set were his primary interest. His work influenced John Constable and English landscape painting in the 19th century. Perhaps his most famous painting is The Blue Boy.
