Fruit fly



Fruit fly, small winged insects of the families Tephritidae and Drosophilidae that feed on decaying vegetation and ripe fruit, sometimes causing great damage to crops. Some species, such as the vinegar fly (Drosophila melanogaster), are used for genetics experiments because they breed rapidly.
