Francis Ferdinand (1863–1914), Austrian archduke and heir apparent of the Austro-Hungarian throne. The assassination of the archduke and his wife, Sophie, in Sarajevo, Yugoslovia by the Serbian Gavrilo Princip precipitated the outbreak of World War I.
