Fort Wayne



Fort Wayne (pop. 363,811), city in northeastern Indiana, the site of a settlement of the Miami tribe visited by French explorer La Salle in 1670. Named for General Anthony Wayne, who built a fort there in 1794 and incorporated it as a city in 1840, Fort Wayne is the principal industrial and commercial center of northeastern Indiana and a wholesale outlet for the surrounding agricultural area.
