Fort Niagara



Fort Niagara, fort on the eastern shore of the Niagara River (now on the New York- Ontario border) built by the French in 1726 to guard the river entrance to the fur country. Captured by the British during the French and Indian Wars, it was given to the United States in a 1796 treaty, temporarily taken back, then finally returned to U.S. hands in 1815.
