Nathan Bedford Forrest



Forrest, Nathan Bedford (1821–77), Confederate cavalry general. He was esteemed for his bravery and leadership. His several victories over Union forces included capturing Fort Pillow, Tenn. (1864), during which many African-American defenders were killed. Later that year he commanded all cavalry under J.B. Hood in the Tennessee campaign.
