James Vincent Forrestal



Forrestal, James Vincent (1892–1949), U.S. secretary of defense, first head of the newly formed defense department (1947). He had previously served as secretary of the navy. Emotional and physical stress caused his resignation in 1949, and he committed suicide shortly thereafter.
