Hamilton Fish



Fish, Hamilton (1808–93), U.S. statesman. A Whig representative (1843–45) and senator from New York (1851–57), Fish was President Ulysses S. Grant's secretary of state (1869–77). He helped bring about the 1871 Treaty of Washington, which settled the Alabama Claims with Britain.
