Bobby Fischer



Fischer, Bobby (Robert James Fisher; 1943– ), U.S. chess player, In 1958, he became the youngest player to attain the rank of international grand master. In 1972 in Iceland, he became the first American to win the world championship, defeating the Russian Boris Spassky in a widely publicized tournament. He subsequently refused to defend his title, which was awarded to Anatoly Karpov in 1975.
