Fertile Crescent

Fertile Crescent, historic area in the Middle East, birthplace of the Sumerian, Phoenician, and Hebrew civilizations. It extends in an arc, or crescent, from the north coast of the Persian Gulf to the east coast of the Mediterranean Sea, with the Nile river to the west and the Tigris and Euphrates rivers to the east. Natural irrigation made this semi-arid land fertile.
