Evangelicalism



Evangelicalism, Protestant theological movement that emphasizes personal conversion and biblical authority. Among the denominations using the name are the Evangelical Lutherans; the Evangelical and Reformed Church, which joined the Congregational Christian Churches in 1961 to form the United Church of Christ; the Evangelical Covenant Church of America; and the Evangelical United Brethren. The name was also applied to the movement led by John Wesley in the 18th century that eventually separated from the Church of England to become the Methodist Church.
