Eugenius IV



Eugenius IV (1383–1447), pope (1431–47). He fought with the Council of Basel (1431–49) to affirm the pope's supreme authority over church councils. He also succeeded in obtaining a temporary reunification with the Greek Orthodox and other Eastern churches (1438). He reigned from Florence 1434–43 because of civil disturbances in Rome.
