Escorial



Escorial, monastery and palace in central Spain, 26 mi (42 km) northwest of Madrid. One of the most imposing buildings in Europe, it was built (1563–84) by Philip Π and houses a church, palace, college, and mausoleum in which many Spanish kings are buried. Its art collection contains works by Velásquez, El Greco, and Tintoretto, among others.
