Ergot



Ergot, disease of grasses and cereals caused by a fungus of the genus Claviceps. The word is also used to apply to the dark purple spots on the heads of rye caused by the disease. Ergots contain toxic alkaloids that are poisonous to animals and humans. The alkaloid ergotamine, also contained in ergots, is used in the treatment of migraine headaches.
