Equal Rights Amendment



Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), proposed Constitutional amendment prohibiting discrimination on grounds of sex. Introduced in Congress in various years beginning in 1923, it finally passed in 1972. In 1978 the deadline for ratification by 38 states was extended to June 30, 1982, but that deadline passed without the necessary approval by state legislature.
