English sparrow



English sparrow, or house sparrow, bird (Passer domesticus) of the weaverbird family. English sparrows were introduced into the United States from Europe in 1852 and have since become abundant both in cities and the countryside. About 6 in (15 cm) long, with reddish-brown streaked feathers, they are omnivorous.
