Embroidery, decorations on fabric produced by stitching with a needle and colored thread. A variety of threads and backing material are used. The basic stitches are flat, knotted, chained, or looped. This form of ornamentation has been used to decorate household items, peasant clothing, and the apparel of royalty for thousands of years, in many cultures around the globe.
