Ralph Waldo Ellison

Ellison, Ralph Waldo (1914–94), African-American writer. His novel Invisible Man (1952), a story of black alienation in a hostile white society, won a National Book Award. Shadow and Act (1964) and Going to the Territory (1986) are collections of his essays and speeches.
