Sir Edward William Elgar

Elgar, Sir Edward William (1857–1934), English composer. Elgar followed the German orchestral and choral traditions of the 19th century, but his Enigma Variations (1899) and Pomp and Circumstance marches (1901–30) reflect a distinct English style. Other important works include the oratorio The Dream of Gerontius (1900), 2 symphonies, violin and cello concertos, and the concert overture Cockaigne (1901).
