Eleusinian mysteries

Eleusinian mysteries, secret religious rites in ancient Greece. They were originally performed in honor of Demeter, goddess of agriculture, at Eleusis, near Athens, dramatizing the descent of her daughter Persephone into the underworld and her inevitable return from the land of the dead, symbolizing the endless seasonal cycles. Later the rites were performed in Athens.
