Electrocution

Electrocution, usually fatal effect of passing a high-energy electrical current through a body. Electricity passing through the body fluid, which acts as a resistor, causes burns at sites of connection and along the electrical pathway. Convulsions and rhythm disturbances in the heart are usual; the latter are the cause of immediate death. Artificial respiration with cardiac massage must be started immediately if resuscitation is to be successful.
