Dutch



Dutch, western Germanic language spoken in the Netherlands and (as Flemish) in North Belgium, as well as in Suriname and the Dutch Antilles. Afrikaans, spoken in South Africa, is derived from Dutch. Dutch evolved largely from the speech of the Franks, who settled in the Low Countries in the 4th–5th centuries. About 20 million people speak Dutch.
