Dry Tortugas



Dry Tortugas, group of 7 coral islands about 50 mi (80 km) west of Key West, Fla. They were discovered in 1513 by Juan Ponce de León, who gave them the Spanish name for the turtles with which the islands abound. The largest of the group, Loggerhead Key, is approximately 1 mi (1.6 km) in length.
