Dominica

Dominica (official name, Commonwealth of Dominica), independent state, the largest island in the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles group, between Guadeloupe and Martinique. Its area is 290 sq mi (751 sq km). The population is largely descended from slaves brought to the island from Africa in the 18th century. The rich volcanic soil produces bananas, coconuts, citrus fruits, and cinnamon. Dominica also exports pumice. Discovered by Columbus in 1493, Dominica was colonized by France in the early 17th century, acquired by Britain in 1805, and became internally self-governing in 1967. In 1978 the island achieved full independence within the British Commonwealth. The capital city is Roseau. The World Trade Organization was strongly against the European Union's preferential treatment regarding the export of bananas into the EU.
