Doctorow, E(dgar) L(aurence) (1931– ), U.S. novelist. His books include The Book of Daniel (1971), a historical novel about Julius and Ethel Rosenberg and their children; Ragtime (1975), which interweaves fictional portraits of Sigmund Freud, C.J. Jung, Harry Houdini, and Henry Ford, among others; Loon Lake (1980), set during the Great Depression; Billy Bathgate (1989); The Immortals (1994); and The Waterworks (1994).
