Detonator

Detonator, device used to set off a high-explosive charge. A high explosive such as dynamite is not sensitive to small shocks and can therefore be handled safely. The detonator sets off a minor explosion to produce a shock large enough to initiate the main explosion. Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, also produced the first effective detonator.
